An Adventure of a Life Time..

An Adventure of a Life Time..

An Adventure of a Life Time..

I never took the time to write this story down, so now that I am getting an itch for adventure again I figured I would recount my last great motoring adventure. It involved several countries, my cousin, and a Peugeot.

The Route:

A few years back I got tired of the rat race, the everyday of being a drone in an office and while I loved the job and the industry, I needed some time off. I was making good money working as the Special Projects Director for a large restoration parts company here in Southern California. However, after four years it was time for a monumental vacation. So, I quit my job, kissed my fiancée (now wife) good bye, and set off for Europe. With little more than a rough plan, a road map, and a hastily arranged short term lease with Peugeot’s “Open Europe” program, I landed in London to meet my younger cousin Nathan that had recently finished a exchange student program in the UK and was not excited about coming home right away.

I spent a few days in London while we made arrangments to get to souther France where our new Peugeot was to be delivered. London is an amazing city so much history, from the Romans, to the Second World War every corner of London offers a glimpse of times lost, while the ultra modern buildings like the Gherkin give a foretaste of things to come. Coming from the Los Angeles area where everything is rebuilt about every 20 years it was interesting to see the old buildings of London still pockmarked from the German bombs. I could go on and on about the British Library, Tower of London, etc… but this is a story about motoring so back to that. We had decided to pick up our sparkling new Peugeot 206sw in Montpellier, in the south of France and after a quick flight on Ryan Air for around we were in sunny Southern France.

This was a very good idea as there is nowhere on earth I could imagine being more beautiful than the French Riviera…Italy would prove me wrong. Landing in France, we get the typical customs hold ups, and make a phone call to the Peugeot Open Europe contact that was meeting us with the car. A very polite young man walked us to the car; I giving Nathan a very sinister look confirmed with the Peugeot representative that the lease included “unlimited mileage” he nodded yes, I think he knew that the resale on this car would be slightly dented by the amount of miles we were going to put on the car. In Europe, I had discovered the average car travels less than 8,000 kilometers a year that is just under 5,000 miles a year. In California my home state we drive on average 15,000 miles a year, that over 24,000 kilometers. Nathan and I had laid out an ambitious route that would allow us to cover almost 18,000 kilometers in just 21 days, seeing everything Europe had to offer before running out of money and retreating back to London.

We were off, since Nathan had been living in London and had done a bit of traveling in Europe already, so I had him make our arrangements for the first night. We had decided to head right to Barcelona (Spain), and when we got their, a street fair was going on, the road signs were mounted on the sides of the buildings far out of view, the Peugeot is hardly able to move amongst all the revelers crowding the streets. The hotel Nathan had selected has a strange Arabic sounding name for being in Spain, but right now, I am wondering why the car feels splashy. I can tell…we have a flat, there is nowhere to park, we don’t speak Spanish, and we can’t even find this hotel. I see a parking garage and pull in. A very nice parking attendant points us to a location where we can park for 12 Euros for 24 hours, he even pulls a floor jack out and helps us change a tire, perhaps Spain is a civilized country after all.

Nathan is attempting to find out where the hotel is (it’s a hostel), and by the grace of God it was just a few blocks away, we left our car in the parking garage and walked a few blocks following a map drawn up by the parking attendant. As we made our way to the hostel, I started to notice that many of the signs were in Arabic, and that men in traditional Arab clothing were standing in the doorways looking cross at us. The streets started to look worse and worse, and the hotel did not look much better. We checked in and we are shown to what the man at the front desk called rooms. “Nathan, where the hell did you find this place” I said, “booked it online” he replied, “it looked nice”. Our “rooms” were metal boxes stacked three high with a ladder, a curtain, a mattress (using that term lightly), and a small lockable box. “We are paying to go to prison,” I said to Nathan who laughed. I was convinced we would be killed, or at least robbed. Later on that night Nathan see’s a man peering into my box, and tells him to take a hike. The next morning we discovered that Nathan’s alarm clock had stolen…we packed, went back to the car and dropped off our bags, and wondered around Barcelona. It is a painfully beautiful city, and I could not help to snap away, at this point in my life I was still an aspiring photographer. You could tell the photos that Nathan took with me in them because they are not in focus, or the apature is set wrong. We went to seek out an internet café, and a real café for some e-mail and breakfast, what was really amazing is the shear amount of porn being sold out of special porn newsstands. The city market is made up of small booths, and every other one is selling porn. I was done with Spain, while I am sure there is much to see and do, how good could it be from a country that builds the SEAT Alhambra.

Back on the road and in my adopted home country of France I feel much better, I understand more of the language, and the food is amazing and cheap. Coming from the U.S. I was honestly expecting the French people to attempt to kill me every chance they got since we only hear stories of the rude French. But I found them to be some of themost engaging, friendly, and patient people on earth. The secret is to at least attempt to communicate as best you can in French and be respectful that their language, it is a source of pride for them, demanding that they speak English is rude and we saw plenty of American’s (mostly with fanny packs) getting upset at people at restaurants, hotels, and bars because they did not speak English. News flash you’re not in an English speaking country. As we passed through France on the way to Italy, I discovered my place. It is the place I would pick up and move to if given the opportunity in a hear beat, taking the wife and dogs along with me. This place is Cassis in Southern France; I would move to Cassis right now, if only I could find a way.

In Monaco I was in car lovers heaven, pulling up to a light the car in front of me is a Zonda, next to me a vintage Ferrari, and behind me a Bentley Continental. I however was behind the wheel of a mighty Peugeot. Now I had owned a Peugeot 405 here in the US and loved the car, it was fast, clean, reliable, and one of the best handling front wheel drive cars I have ever owned. I had been dreaming of owning a 206 for a daily driver for years, and even looked into buying one in Mexico and bringing it to the US, however, the smog and safety Nazis will not allow a French car in the US…yet we can buy a Daewoo??? The car we picked out was a manual, gas powered wagon, we figured we may not always be able to get a hotel so at least the station wagon would allow us to sleep in the car in our sleeping bags, we did do this a few nights, but we did it towards the end of the trip in the snow, not a good idea…. We passed into Italy and Nathan was excited and he had a long list of things we wanted to see from Pisa to Pompeii so we had a long drive ahead of us. We had made a deal that we would stay off the main roads, the car being a manual I had to drive the entire trip, but I did not mind much. I attempted while in Italy to teach Nathan stick shift driving, but it did not go well, and we could not afford to replace the clutch so I contunied to drive.

We drove through Rome and having learned our lesson in Barcelona found a nice quite village with a train station outside of the city parking was free and it only cost 2 Euros to ride the train into the city round trip. The advantage to having a car is you don’t have to carry your gear with you. Just take what you need and lock the rest up in the trunk. Words cannot describe the city of Rome, unless you have seen it, you can’t even comprehend the scale of it all. Spending the entire day in Rome was amazing, but there was much more to see, we hopped a train and got back to the car, where we set off south towards Pisa to see the leaning tower then on to Pompeii. Italy is much like Southern California many times while driving along the coast you could believe that you were driving along the Pacific Coast Highway, many of the similar plants, the only major difference is the buildings are a little older, and the food is slightly better.

The food is the best part of Europe they have the small café or street food down to an art, New York has hotdogs, L.A. as Tacos, but you can find amazing homemade treats any little town in Europe. Having driven down the coast of Italy as far south as Pompeii, we decided to take a road less traveled up the dead center of the country and head back towards France. The middle of Italy is much like the middle of America, farmland,

Motoring News: Life In The Fast Lane Is Slowing Down

Motoring News: Life In The Fast Lane Is Slowing Down

Motoring News: Life In The Fast Lane Is Slowing Down

Anger is beginning to rise as the cost of petrol accelerates at an alarming speed, with wholesale and tax prices being blamed for “pump prices heading for yet another all-time high”, according to the Independent website.  RoamingTimes.com has reported that “fuel economy is on many RVers minds”, especially with a Class A motorhome getting only 7mpg. The Class C Dodge Sprinter chassis addresses this problem, and can do as much as 20mpg overall, according to Dodge.

Angry motorists have slammed on the breaks as a result of petrol prices escalating, with experts warning fuel costs will continue to rocket to record highs of £1.25 per litre by the end of 2010. The sudden increase according to Chairman of RMI, Brian Madderson, might be down to an increase in the price of oil which could add as much as another 5p per litre at the pump.

Spokesman for the AA, Luke Bosdet warned that “driver’s budgets were already stretched to the limit and any price hikes in 2010 were likely to be devastating”. This is bad news for motorhome owners who spend a long time at the pumps, filling their mobile homes up. They could be there for the same length of time but for a much higher cost if prices continue to rise.

Putting pedal to the metal will be a thing of the past if prices keep rising as they are, with people slowing down in a bid to preserve fuel. This may be good news for police patrolling the motorways looking for speeding motorists, but bad news for people who have far to travel, with their journey taking even longer plodding along in the slow lane.

According to the Independent website “petrolheads may be squealing as pump prices approach an all-time high, but drivers of diesels are sitting pretty”. Diesel vehicle owners may have splashed out on average around £1,000 extra on upfront costs, but with the 20% greater fuel efficiency owners are hoping to recoup the initial costs.

The motoring industry suffered after the January VAT increase, resulting in a 2.5% rise. To further add to the misery for motorists, fuel duty is set to rise on April 1st by inflation plus 1p. This is more bad news for drivers around the UK who are planning to motor their home around the country this summer.

Whether you’re planning on plodding along in the slow lane or braving the current frenzy of the fast lane, you will need insurance either way. Call free on 0800 999 2030 and let Sureterm Direct provide you with competitive motorhome insurance or click here for an instant online quote.

A Philosophy of Travelling Life

A Philosophy of Travelling Life

A Philosophy of Travelling Life

There is a thought that time does not go actually move, but rather it just remains as a state or as an idea. For God of course a millennium is just a fleeting moment. But, here on our beautiful planet life proceeds under its own steam, at a pace that is relevant to the time. People are born, growing, go kindergarten, school, university, work and then retire. After such a long journey to us mere mortals, people have got plenty of time to rest and relax. The youth of today have love and time and run, if it stops tomorrow; the older you are the more memories and moments you begin to understand. And every person in his/ her 30s, 40s, 50s etc can say the life really only begins to make any sense, once you have the knowledge of time. The young see and rush at life with such vigour thinking it is only going to last the one day, but this is truly only a prelude for a real life. I have noted that many retired people still retain plenty of energy and power. They are ready to go be active and go on holidays and still want to experience new emotions and feelings. The time and new freedom gives them the wings to fly! With such a wide range of psychic types and individualities, there is among us a diversity of reasons, motivations and goals that these travellers are intent on seeing.

Academic thinking people like intellectual travelling. They are often interested in feeding their brain with fresh information that stimulates their thoughts. The most important aspect of their travel is to learn and open your mind and discover new things. I suggest that people with good sense would like to visit historical places, new locations, places of interest, tourist attractions, museums, parks, zoos, aquariums…They adore to meet new people, study new cultures, find out new facts about history, locations, countries etc. They are by definition curios and the more places they visit, the more satisfied they feel and a need to look for more. I also propose that a second type of seeker is found to be fonder of the physical pastimes. They still enjoy the adventures of travel, but they go further by delving into the likes of camping, fishing, hunting, hiking, skiing, rafting, canoeing and in general water sports or any other physical activities. I feel it provides such people with a portion of adrenalin, as they like the risk and most definitely the feel the end justifies the means! Creative people get inspiration from art. Art is a style of life that stimulates them for masterpieces and deeds. Depending on the particular passion a person can go to Austria for seeing the best performance at the State Vienna Opera House, Metropolitan Opera in New York or to see a musical performance in a Broadway Theatre. Also for an artistic type it can be an appeal to visit galleries of pictures, to attend a movie festival etc. There is one more group of people that really enjoy the life of socialising during their trips. “Social people” love to visit their families, friends and meet new people. It is important for retired people feel like they are a part of a global community, they made their contribution and they should now enjoy and reap the rewards.

So, what is your choice regarding travelling? Would you like to go to an unknown location and explore it, to get some knowledge or have fun exploring the unknown? I know of a place where all these aspirations can be found, something that will gibe them a very personal insight into themselves. The Isle of Wight is the right place for holiday- makers. There are so many IOW attractions worth seeing. IOW tourism is developed at a high standard with the European culture and traditions.

Isle of Wight is a magnificent point to take a superb break. If you think to voyage Isle of Wight, then you need all essential information on this island. Check what you can find our Island Eye portal.

Get Lost to Get Found – How Travel Can Change Your Life

Get Lost to Get Found – How Travel Can Change Your Life

Get Lost to Get Found – How Travel Can Change Your Life

“twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” — Mark Twain

I don’t know when it happened but it did.  For some reason, someone, somewhere at sometime thought it was a great idea to start pushing high school students to rush off to university or college immediately after graduating.

Are you telling kids NOT to go to university?

No, well almost no.

I encourage students to go to university and college when they are ready for that type of experience.

There are a ton of high school students who are prepared for college and university right after finishing high school but there are also those who need some time.  Now, I am not talking about time to play more Xbox and watch more videos on YouTube.  I am talking about taking time to figure themselves out a little bit more.  To have some experiences that will lead them to becoming more self-aware and to show them of the vast amount of possibilities for them and their future.

One of my suggestions for students who aren’t too sure if university or college is right for them is to, GET LOST!

What I mean, is travel.

Travel pushes people outside of their comfort zones and usually shows them things they never knew about themselves.  The travel doesn’t have to be expensive and it doesn’t even have to be outside of their home country but it does have to be away from their day-to-day lives and away from their day-to-day pressures and routines.

Through travel students can meet new people, create new experiences with relevance and context for their lives and it can also boost a young person’s confidence.

But Ryan, if all these students don’t go to university right away what will happen to the future of our nation and it’s people?

Well, England and other European countries actually push for students to take what they call a ‘Gap Year’.  This is a year students are to take for themselves to travel, to volunteer, to work abroad and to become more aware of themselves and their future.   After completing a Gap Year, students then enroll in university or college and then statistically speaking are more likely to finish their program than their US counterpart.

England boasts an impressive 6.8% University dropout rate compared to the US where only 54% of College students were surveyed to have a degree 6 years after enrolling in their program.

So instead of pushing students to hurry up and decide which schools to apply to, we should be encouraging them to decide which countries and cities to visit and to hurry up and get lost!

Could it be that getting lost is actually the best way for students to get found?

4×4 News: Life Begins At Forty For The Legendary Range Rover

4×4 News: Life Begins At Forty For The Legendary Range Rover

4×4 News: Life Begins At Forty For The Legendary Range Rover

The iconic classic Range Rover doesn’t look a day over 39, but turning 40 marks the end of another era for Land Rover with some trendy modifications to bring it up to date. According to UKAutoBlog.com, The first model, the two-door Range Rover known as the classic, went on sale in 1970, promising to combine “Rover car comfort with Land Rover strength and four-wheel drive mobility”.

When other vehicles changed shape and design the Land Rover stayed true to its original distinctive characteristics which made it so popular when it burst onto the scene 40 years ago. Boasting the title of “world’s first vehicle as good on road as off-road”, the Land Rover certainly has reason to celebrate, reports Motoring.co.uk. In addition, Managing Director of Land Rover, Phil Popham believes that “Land Rover has unique history of product innovation, but the Range Rover probably remains the most historically significant vehicle we have ever launched”.

Revolutionary in its day, the Range Rover luxury 4×4 remains ubiquitous, with many adjustments bringing it firmly into the future. The first Range Rover was characterised by the square upright stance, which thankfully is still apparent in today’s version. Also evident is the fact that the Range Rover “is really four vehicles in one”, according to Land Rover’s Managing Director, who also said, “Its seven-days-a-week luxury motor car; a leisure vehicle that will range far and wide on the highways and no-ways of the world; a high performance car for long distance travel and a working cross-country vehicle”.

They say 40 is the new 30, which means Land Rover have even more reason to celebrate. According to LandRoverClub.net, “when you drive a Land Rover you drive history”, and what a whole lot of history that is – over four decades to be exact. AutoBlog.com have reported that “with the new compact Range Rover (currently known as the LRX) due to debut at this year’s Paris show, the uniquely British 4×4 looks set to continue its march through the history books”.

If you own a piece of history you will need quality 4×4 insurance to cover your classic pride and joy. Call Sureterm Direct free on 0800 999 2030 or click here for a competitive 4×4 or classic insurance quote.
