Why Booking a Package holiday is better than booking Flights + Hotel separately?
Last month, a friend of mine happily called me and told me about his triumph over making a reservation at a fairly cheap price for his holidays to Thailand. The gentleman was proud how he spent a few hours on the weekend phoning different travel agencies and getting quotes on cheap flights & packages to Thailand. He than thought of booking his flights and hotel separately to save some bucks, since one agent had a better flight deal and another had a better hotel deal. All went well, the timings matched and he really saved some good bucks……Yet, the experience he shared later was like this: – “I was happy to get a cheap international flight with big baggage allowance. I carried around 36 KG of my baggage and some other stuff for diving roughly around 5 KG. It was still less than my total baggage allowance. But when I had to take the connecting flight (which he bought separately), it had only 30 KGs limit including hand carry!!! So ultimately I had to pay for the extra baggage that was far higher than what I saved on my tickets”.
This is not just one incident, some time people fail to manage enough time to connect flights and eventually end up missing their connecting flights. Sometimes it’s even worse when they book flights & hotels separately, since the hotel booked is not in accordance with the flight timings so they have to wait for free transfers some time even over night …. The baggage issue, as one mentioned above is one of the most common mistakes in booking flights, local flights and hotels separately. Most Hotels usually have specific check in time and in some cases, where people arrive at mid night they end up with no free transfers and no early check in available. Eventually they pay more and suffer more too.
Yet in comparison to that if a flight is booked with a hotel, say if you would like to extend your stay or return earlier than planned or just in case, if there is any schedule change, a delay, there is just one door that you will be knocking at to get all sorted out. Specially, in peak season flight delays (reported even 3 days late) are more common and so are the holidays. Since, December, January, July and April are considered as peak seasons. So the number of flights delayed and getting rescheduled is more common too. Under such circumstances if you have only one agent, he will be able to sort out not only the flights for you but also book you in another place temporarily using his ground handler services.
Apart from saving you from many common errors in timings, connection, baggage, transfer and delays, the best thing that a “Package Holiday” can do for you is discounted airfares. Even with some companies you can save up to 200 GBP just if you book a package instead of a separate hotel and flights! As many airlines provide special fares for package holidays, for example an average British Airways fare for a Premium class is 1800 GBP for Dubai, yet if you get a “Package” and accommodation reserved for you. The fare will be discounted to sometimes as low as only 1400 GBP depending on the season. Such fares are called “Net Inclusive fares” that include a hotel as well as flight.
